State of Israel Coins Water Systems Hazor Pewter Medal $256.11 This is the third medal in a fascinating series devoted to the Ancient Water Systems in Eretz Israel consisting of 4 rectangular ingot medals. The first 2 Caesarea and Hazor have already been issued; the newest in the series is devoted to Megiddo. The water system in Megiddo dates from the 10th century BCE when Megiddo was one of three royal centers. To safeguard the city s water supply in times of siege a 25 meterdeep vertical shaft and a subterranean 80 meterlong horizontal tunnel were painstakingly cut in the rock on the western side of the city. This made it possible to reach the spring outside the city walls without being seen by the enemy. The medals are available in 2 versions: in 4 oz. Sterling silver with exceptionally high quality reliefs and in pewter a metal associated with the Art Nouveau movement and much prized by collectors the world over. The medals are presented in a special set box with place for the 4 medals and 4 matching stamps on 2 First Day Covers issued by the Israel Philatelic Service. Both the medals and the stamps were designed by noted Israeli artist Eliezer Weishoff. Obverse:. The medal face features the Megiddo water system. Reverse:. On the back common to the 4 medals in the series a verse from the Book of Kings. Designer:. Eliezer Weishoff. Silver medal: Hecht. Pewter medal: Tigel. Details: 41662003 2006 Pewter 50×90 Diameter mm. 180.0 Weight gm. |

State of Israel Coins Water Systems Caesarea Pewter Medal $256.11 This is the first in a new and original series of medals dedicated to ancient water systems in Eretz Israel. These unusual rectangularshaped medals will be presented in a special set box designed to house the 4 medals and 4 matching stamps issued by the Israel Philatelic Service. Both the medals and the stamps were designed by the noted Israeli artist Eliezer Weishoff. Ancient water systems within fortified cities including underground quarried tunnels have been uncovered in many places in Eretz Israel. These systems are evidence of the engineering skill and understanding of hydrology of the early inhabitants as well as their technical ability. The most prominent among them mostly from the Iron Age (9th to 7th centuries before the Common Era) are Hazor Megiddo Jerusalem and others. As cities grew it became more necessary to bring water from more distant sources. Beginning with the Hellenistic period (3rd C. before the Common Era) aqueducts were built which transported spring water many kilometers. The first medal in the series features the aqueduct in Caesarea. Herod built the first aqueduct in Caesarea which brings water from springs at the base of Mount Carmel and Ramot Menashe. In order that the water would flow by the pull of gravity the aqueduct was built on arches and the gradient was carefully measured. Obverse:. The medal face features the aqueduct in Caesarea. Reverse:. On the back common to the 4 medals in the series a verse from the Book of Kings. Edge:. Smooth. Designer:. Eliezer Weishoff. Silver medal: Hecht. Pewter medal: Tigel. Details: 41662001 2005 Pewter 50×90 Diameter mm. 180.0 Weight gm. |
