USED: Another Time, Another Place $6.99 Another Time, Another Place isn’t as immediately thrilling as Ferry’s solo debut, but still is a great listen. The same core band that backed Ferry up on the earlier record stays more or less in place here. If, like Roxy over the years, this collection is a touch less frenetic at points in comparison to Ferry’s earlier solo stab, the opening blast through “The ‘In’ Crowd” doesn’t show it. Porter’s guitar rips along as intensely as Phil Manzanera’s can, and the whole thing makes Elvis’ original take seem pretty tame. Beyond that, things will be familiar to anyone who’s heard These Foolish Things — same general atmosphere, same overall approach of Ferry taking classic originals and putting his own proto-lounge-lizard stamp on them, mixing energetic versions with far calmer ones. A very intriguing development is his inclusion of efforts from up-and-coming country writers and singers — thus, a loud and groovy cover of “Funny How Time Slips Away” by Willie Nelson and another of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night.” Other country atmospheres slip in here and there via another nod to Elvis (“Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” originally by Joe South), while other classics get tapped with versions of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and Sam Cooke’s “(What A) Wonderful World.” The album as a whole feels a touch more formal than its predecessor, but Ferry and company, plus various brass and string sections, turn on the showiness enough to make it all fun. USED: Classic Albums: Electric Ladyland [DVD] $7.99 Director Roger Pomphrey creates a unique montage of thoughts, impressions, photographs, and sounds about the creation and development of the Jimi Hendrix album Electric Ladyland. Engineer Eddie Kramer cracks open the tapes and the world gets to hear Rolling Stone Brian Jones’ unreleased piano track to “All Along the Watchtower,” Jimi’s own strange “sci-fi” “air” vocal sounds on “1983…(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)” — fascinating stuff that makes a hardcore Hendrix fan or any serious musician wish there were 16 hours of information about this recording rather than just the 60 minutes or so that you get here. The DVD has no bonus material — unless you consider the lame “discography” consisting of a mere three discs, with no information on Are You Experienced or Axis: Bold as Love — but the program is cleverly put together and holds one’s attention. There is a track selection giving the viewer some mobility and a strong, succinct script which gets the message across efficiently. Of course, the interview footage with Noel Redding and Chas Chandler is priceless now, and the information from the lips of the Jefferson Airplane’s Jack Casady, Buddy Miles, Steve Winwood, Dave Mason, and other players on these sessions is all wonderful and marvelous. Originally released by Rhino on video in 1998, this Eagle Rock Entertainment version comes with a one-page pullout that includes the “Chapter Selection” and a blurb for other titles in the series: Lou Reed’s Transformer, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, and Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Created originally for television, the hour zips by with nuggets on different aspects of the release, including photographer David Montgomery and record executive Chris Stamp discussing the making of the controversial U.K. “naked ladies” cover with Eddie Kramer explaining how Jimi was annoyed by an album design he had no control over. Kramer does an excellent and spirited job of pretty much narrating this as notes from Noel…

USED: HITS & RARE CLASSICS 0291 $6.99 This collection is marred by abbreviated versions of “Get Ready,” “I Know I’m Losing You,” and others. For fans who didn’t purchase individual albums, though, this is a good overall view of their work. The tender “Keepin’ Me Out of the Storm” shows a different side of the rockers; it’s melodic and would fit well on Quiet Storm formats. Rare Earth excelled at remaking tunes and putting their own stamp on them, as they do on “Chained,” made famous by Marvin Gaye. Lead singer Peter Hoorelbeke had a powerful voice that didn’t take a back seat to anybody’s. Imagine if they had cut “War,” and why didn’t they? ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
